Our Story

Our roots are firmly in the communities we help empower; we're more than just a tech company.

Here’s some of our history and the story behind how we’ve become the UK and Ireland’s most widely used social prescribing platform.

Our Story

Elemental was established by former Community Development workers to help localities to enhance how they reach, support and empower people by adding value to their lives. Elemental is a digital platform that helps stakeholders in community health and wellbeing to establish, scale and measure the uptake and impact of the social prescribing movement.

When Jennifer Neff, and Leeann Monk- Ozgul met in 2013, they were both working in Community Development.

The pair found much in common, including a growing frustration that not everyone in the community had the same opportunities to access health, education and welfare services.

A talk by the late educationalist Sir Ken Robinson sparked the duo into action. He said that when you find your passion, anything is possible because you are in your element. That was one of the catalysts that led the pair to set up Elemental Software. The two women set about creating a digital platform for “social prescribing” – the idea that communities could be supported and empowered by many to engage in activities and interventions that added value to their lives.

When the pair came second in an idea pitching competition -The TMED Health Challenge, the winner, Professor Maurice Mulvenna of Ulster University, donated his £500 prize.

The lack of technological background has not held them back. In fact, many say that it has been the pair’s understanding of communities that has made all the difference.

Both Jennifer and Leeann believe that it’s about putting people first, and technology second.

Today, Elemental Software is used across the UK and the island of Ireland, linking primary care, secondary care, local authorities, housing associations, prison services, education and community and voluntary sectors all around the person. The company employs over 30 talented, community-focused staff at its offices in Derry City Centre and is on track to double in size in the next two years.

Elemental recruits carefully so that the culture that has made Elemental so successful with customers is maintained.

Elemental customers say that Elemental reduces the administration associated with social prescribing so that they can work more within the communities they serve.

Commissioners love Elemental because of the data it generates enables them to see what’s working well at a street by street and locality level. They can see where the gaps are in service delivery and what empowers communities most.

Communities love Elemental because they can get introduced to social prescribing by their GPs, social workers, community pharmacists, health coaches and mental health teams.

This is a powerful route out of health inequality.

So what makes us different from other tech companies?

We believe it’s our combined extensive experience of working in the community, paired with a powerful vision for community-powered health and wellbeing and digital, that makes the difference. We know that social prescribing works and we want to continue to help those commissioning and delivering social prescribing to be able to connect people, build communities and improve lives. Elemental is helping thousands of people to gather and use the evidence to ensure that social prescribing is core funded so that everyone who needs it, has access to a Social Prescribing Link Worker in their community.
